Racehorse Education
Training is a lifelong journey. At Glen Gallic, we start from the very moment the foal is born. With careful progressive handling of the foal as it develops to start the bond between the horse and the handler/rider. Each step of this process helps to strengthen this trust and to reduce anxiety in the horse.
Glen Gallic’s approach to training and education can aid horses at every stage of their career, call us to discuss how our training could help optimise the performance of your horse.
Weanling Training
This 2 week programme can be done during the weaning process or just after. It helps the young horse to understand what is expected in safely leading and walking the horse, listening for instructions, through to an introduction to stable life. As part of this process the young horse is guided through important future steps like walking on and off floats, barriers, crush, wash bays, walkers etc.
Starting
There is a lot in language and we like to emphasize that we ‘start’ horses to riding, we don’t ‘break them in’. Our programme in introducing horses to the riding experience starts with lots of ground work and desensitisation. This process helps to produce much more adaptable and confident horses. We tailor the learning speed and programme for the individual needs of each horse. Generally the programme takes 4-6 weeks. For the very best results the horse should then have a restful spell of 6-8 weeks and then have a top up reminder week to ensure the results are well and truly understood by the horse. At this stage they are then ready to start their time with your chosen trainer.
Re-education
Sometimes stable life doesn’t go as planned and a racehorse can develop ‘quirks’ or traits that hamper their racing ability. If we understand what these are we can help to map out a plan to re-educate your racehorse and give them the best chance of overcoming these faults.
Spelling Refresh
As well as a really peaceful relaxing environment for spelling, we can also tailor a spelling programme for your racehorse that includes a little bit of re-fresher education work so that they return to work not only rejuvenated but also mentally much more receptive to the work of stable life. This could include a few days or a few weeks of riding and ground work mixed into the spelling time, dependent on what is required.
Pre-training
Our pre-training programme is tailored to meet the needs of your trainer so that the horse returns to them at exactly the stage they want. This includes ground work, walker fitness, obstacle course, and riding.
